Abstract
Introduction: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) poses a substantial burden on health systems due to its chronic nature and the frequency of acute episodes requiring hospitalization. Effective prevention and treatment of this disease are possible and crucial. Nursing interventions can play a vital role in improving patients' functional and emotional capacity, encouraging self-management, treatment adherence, and the adoption of healthy behaviors.
Objective: To synthesize the scientific evidence on the impact that nursing interventions have on the hospital readmission rate of people with COPD.
Methodology: Systematic literature review according to the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. Inclusion criteria and Boolean search were defined at EBSCOhost and TripDatabase.
Results: Five articles were included for the purpose of this review. The studies portray the components of educational support and empowerment of the person for self-management of the disease and therapeutic regimen by nurses. These interventions have a positive impact on the quality of life of people with COPD and, consequently, on a reduction in the length of hospital stay and hospital readmissions.
Conclusion: The research revealed a variety of effective approaches implemented by specialist nurses. The results indicate that nursing interventions play a crucial role in intervention programs for patients with COPD, suggesting a potential improvement in quality of life and a reduction in hospital readmissions.
